Project Description

The “trollbox” was a legendary feature where traders could chat and well, troll on the cryptocurrency exchange Poloniex. During spring of 2019, I was tasked with redesigning the feature for the web.

When the trollbox was previosuly taken down in 2017 due to the excessive moderation effort. As a result, trading volume sank and customers abandoned Poloniex. In an effort to revive the exchange, the trollbox revived and reinvented.

What's wrong with an old troll?

To begin, I evaluated the previous trollbox experience with Alie Brown, the native app designer.

The trollbox could be lived in the right column across main pages of the exchange and could be “popped out” into its own window so that moderators could view the maximum number of posts possible

Users could “tip” other commenters by sending nominal amounts of cryptocurrency. Members who received the most would have their username highlighted in a shade of pink.

Moderators could use the “Banhammer” to temporary ban members who violated the rules.

Project Hypothesis

Reintroducing the trollbox to the exchange will drive traffic to Poloniex and increase trading volume.

Detailed Designs

I designed the updated onboarding flow so that previous users could reclaim their user name and new users could create an account.

Mark Grambau designed all illustrations and icons for the trollbox and all of Circle’s products.

Impact After Launch

The reintroduction of the trollbox drove traffic back to Poloniex web. It also increased downloads of a new mobile app, but the hype was short lived.

I left Circle and the Poloniex team in the spring of 2019 to pursue another opportunity. In late 2019, trading volume was declining and Circle shut down Poloniex US based users due to the uncertain regulatory environment for many alt-coins.

2021 | UX/UI Redesign + Design System Creation

Transforming how operations teams monitor a fleet of self-driving vehicles

I led the redesign of the fleet monitoring product and transformed the forgotten tool into an essential application needed to track the self-driving vehicle fleet’s status and utilization.
